Doha Expands Safe Cycling Routes for Families Across Parks
Doha residents now have more protected paths for easy rides with children through established green spaces.
How we reported this
Doha added 12 kilometres of dedicated cycling lanes this spring inside Aspire Park and along the northern stretch of the Corniche, giving families and new riders their first fully separated routes from motor traffic.
The timing coincides with the city’s summer wellness push that began in May when temperatures eased enough for early-morning group rides. Municipal records show park visitor numbers rose 28 percent between June 2025 and June 2026, with families citing safety concerns as the main reason they avoided earlier routes that mixed with cars.
Two routes families already use
Aspire Park’s new 4.8-kilometre loop starts at the south gate near the Khalifa International Stadium and stays inside the park fence the whole way. The surface is smooth asphalt marked every 500 metres with distance signs and benches placed at regular intervals. Parents can rent child seats or tag-along bikes from the park kiosk for 45 QAR an hour. Further east, the Corniche path runs 7.2 kilometres from the Museum of Islamic Art to the Pearl Monument. A waist-high barrier separates cyclists from the six-lane road, and the route stays flat with only two gentle turns. Both sections open at 5 a.m. and close at 10 p.m., with water fountains every kilometre.
Local cycling group Doha Pedals began free Saturday morning beginner sessions at Aspire Park in March. The group supplies helmets and basic instruction for riders who have not used clipless pedals before. Sessions meet at the main fountain at 6:30 a.m. and last 45 minutes before riders continue on their own.
Practical steps for first rides
Rentals at Aspire Park cost 35 QAR for a standard adult bike and 25 QAR for a child’s model; helmets are included. Riders must show identification and leave a 100 QAR deposit. The same rates apply at the Corniche rental station near the Qatar National Library. Parents should start before 8 a.m. when shade covers most of both routes and temperatures remain below 32 degrees. Mobile apps from the Ministry of Municipality show real-time lane closures and water-fountain status. Riders who finish before 9 a.m. can cool down at the nearby Souq Waqif shaded seating area without returning to a hot car park.
City planners have scheduled an additional 9 kilometres of protected lanes inside Education City by December 2026, connecting the existing Aspire route to the new West Bay waterfront path. Families can check the Doha Parks website for opening dates and updated rental locations.
