Doha Adults Gain 1 Hour Sleep by Powering Down Devices Earlier
Doha adults who power down devices one hour before bed gain nearly an hour of extra sleep, according to fresh local tracking data.
How we reported this
A tracking study of 850 Doha residents released this month shows that limiting phone and tablet use after 9pm adds 52 minutes to average nightly sleep duration.
The finding arrives as Qatar records rising rates of reported fatigue among office workers in West Bay and Education City, where extended evening screen sessions have become routine amid hybrid work patterns that began accelerating in 2024.
Programs taking root along the Corniche and in Al Bidda
Two established local efforts now fold sleep guidance into existing wellness routines. The Qatar Olympic Committee runs weekly evening sessions at Al Bidda Park that include a 30-minute screen-free wind-down before participants walk the waterfront paths. At the same time, Sidra Medicine has partnered with Katara Cultural Village to offer monthly talks on light exposure, with the next slot set for 14 July at the main auditorium.
Numbers behind the local pattern
Sidra Medicine researchers logged melatonin levels in 120 volunteers during June 2025 and recorded a 23 percent drop after 90 minutes of typical smartphone brightness in a darkened room. That drop translated into measurable delays falling asleep, with participants averaging 34 minutes longer to reach deep sleep stages compared with nights when devices stayed in another room. Current pricing for follow-up sleep assessments at Sidra starts at 450 Qatari riyals.
Residents looking to test changes can begin by setting device night modes at 8:30pm and keeping chargers outside the bedroom. Those wanting structured support can register for the free Al Bidda Park sessions through the Qatar Olympic Committee website or attend the July talk at Katara.
