The Pearl-Qatar: island living on Doha's Arabian Riviera
Marinas, Venice-inspired canals and waterfront dining make The Pearl one of Doha's most photographed neighbourhoods.
How we reported this
Just off Doha's prestigious West Bay district lies The Pearl-Qatar, a man-made island built on around four million square metres of reclaimed land. With its yacht-lined marinas, landscaped gardens and pedestrian-friendly plazas, the development has earned the nickname the Arabian Riviera and has become one of the city's most popular places for a relaxed waterfront day out.
The island is arranged into distinct districts, each with its own character. Qanat Quartier is a Venice-inspired quarter of candy-coloured buildings, turquoise canals and arched bridges, making it a favourite for photographs and gentle strolling. Porto Arabia, the main marina district, is lined with luxury yachts, designer boutiques and a long promenade of cafes and restaurants. Medina Centrale adds plazas, gardens, play areas and more dining and shopping options aimed at families.
Food and cafe culture are central to the appeal. The Pearl is home to a wide spread of eateries, from casual coffee shops and ice-cream parlours to international restaurants and fine dining, many of them looking out over the water. Visitors can also arrange boat trips and water sports through operators based on the island.
Getting there is easy. Qatar Tourism notes that the nearest metro station is Legtaifiya on the Red line, from where the M110 Metrolink bus continues to the island; the journey from Hamad International Airport takes around 30 to 40 minutes by car or taxi. The Pearl also sits close to Katara Cultural Village and Lusail, so it can be combined with other stops.
Because it is largely a residential and leisure area rather than a ticketed attraction, The Pearl is free to wander, with costs coming only from shopping, dining or activities, all priced in Qatari riyals. It is at its most pleasant in the evening, when the marina lights up and the promenades fill with people.
